Phil: Physical effects of alcohol use

Aims of this case study:

  • to understand and identify the physical effects of over use of alcohol
  • to be able to interpret common biochemical tests in relationship to alcohol problems

Phil is a 46 year old man who has presented at your surgery for treatment of gout.

His blood pressure was elevated 152/94 and blood tests revealed abnormal Liver Function Tests (GGT 118, AST 72, ALT 68). Phil has admitted in the past to drinking heavily but has not been motivated to reduce his intake.
